The Letters of 1916 project team is delighted to announce that we have just added our 1000th letter to the collection! To mark the addition of the 1000th letter, Dr. Brian Hughes has written this feature<\/a> on the letter writer, Alfred Crofton, and its recipient, his aunt, Lady Augusta Clonbrock.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over 210,000 Irish men, all volunteers, served in the British armed forces during the Great War. This letter<\/a>\u00a0is an important part of the story of the contribution of the Irish diaspora to the Great War and serves as a reminder of the varied and complex nature of Irish involvement in that war.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Letters of 1916 editors would like to thank all of our contributors to the project so far. \u00a0The success of a project like Letters of 1916 is down to the volunteers, without whom, the project could not continue. \u00a0We would like to thank all of our transcribers, uploaders, letter donors<\/a> and the institutions<\/a> who have provided letters for inclusion in the collection. \u00a0We would also like to thank those who have attended our events<\/a>, launches <\/a>and talks<\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
