{"id":6779,"date":"2016-03-20T13:47:02","date_gmt":"2016-03-20T13:47:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/letters1916.ie\/learn\/?p=6779"},"modified":"2018-04-10T13:53:31","modified_gmt":"2018-04-10T13:53:31","slug":"letters-of-1916-new-york-launch-17-march-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/letters1916.ie\/learn\/letters-of-1916-new-york-launch-17-march-2016","title":{"rendered":"Letters of 1916 New York Launch | 17 March 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Letters of 1916 project was launched in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfa.ie\/irish-consulate\/newyork\/\" target=\"_blank\">Consulate General of Ireland<\/a>, New York on St. Patrick&#8217;s Day as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/departmentofforeignaffairs\/docs\/diaspora-booklet-visual-online?e=7918093\/32559590\" target=\"_blank\">Ireland 2016 centenary programme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The event took place after the New York St. Patrick&#8217;s Day parade which has been running since 1762 making it the oldest and largest Patrick&#8217;s Day parade in the world!<\/p>\n<p>Professor\u00a0Philip Nolan, president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maynoothuniversity.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maynooth University<\/a>, was present to introduce the Letters of 1916 project and its founding editor, Professor Susan Schreibman. In her talk, Susan took the audience back to 1916 through readings from\u00a0letters written either in the USA or\u00a0to New Yorkers around the time of the Rising.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' href=\"https:\/\/letters1916.ie\/explore\/letters\/904\" target=\"_blank\">Eamon De Valera<\/a> and his mother, <a href=\"https:\/\/letters1916.ie\/explore\/letters\/905\" target=\"_blank\">Catherine Wheelwright<\/a> (n\u00e9e Coll) while he was imprisoned\u00a0and\u00a0from\u00a0John Quinn,\u00a0the wealthy\u00a0corporate lawyer and patron to many Irish and modernist writers to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/letters1916.ie\/explore\/letters\/219\" target=\"_blank\">George Gavan Duffy<\/a>\u00a0who unsuccessfully defended Sir Roger Casement who was tried for treason\u00a0in\u00a0London.<\/p>\n<p>The audience also learned how shortly after the outbreak of the Rising, cities with significant Irish-American populations, began to raise money under the banner of the Irish Relief Funds.
