She was one of ten McCarthy children: three girls and seven boys.<\/p>\n<p>In 1916, Nancy was 14 and\u00a0was boarding at the Brigidine Convent, Mountrath, Co. Laois with her sisters Eily and Florence. Her uncle, George D. Roche to Nancy and Eily McCarthy, 17 September 1916\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The postcards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his postcards, George remains upbeat. He reassures Nancy that while there are no rats where he is, <em>\u201cwhere they do live they are BIG and no mistake\u201d<\/em> and\u00a0despite living in a small wooden hut in a field <em>\u201cthe Padre\u2019s gramophone is playing now (can\u2019t you hear it?) and we are quite comfy\u201d<\/em>. We learn that in early March, they had\u00a0quite a lot of snow on the Western Front and with it came <em>&#8220;beaucoup snowballing!\u201d<\/em>. George intersperses little bits of French in his cards &amp; jokes about his language skills being <em>&#8220;No bon&#8221;<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Nancy McCarthy<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8126\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8126\" style=\"width: 181px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/frankoconnor.ucc.ie\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8126\" src=\"https:\/\/letters1916.ie\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nancymccarthy-181x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/letters1916.ie\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nancymccarthy-181x300.png 181w, https:\/\/letters1916.ie\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/nancymccarthy.png 299w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 181px) 100vw, 181px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8126\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Frank O&#8217;Connor Research Website<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After qualifying as a Chemist, Nancy went to worked for Boots in Birmingham, England before moving back to Cork city to work in Blair\u2019s Chemist on Patrick Street 1926.\u00a0In an unusual move for a single woman at that time, she opened her own chemist shop in Douglas in 1946 where she worked until she retired in\u00a01986.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Throughout her life, Nancy played an active and influential role in the cultural life of Cork city. Her love of rural Ireland and the Irish language led her to spend many holidays in the Cork\/Kerry Gaeltacht. In later life, she was a committee member of the Cork Orchestral Society, and an enthusiastic follower of the Cork Ballet Company and the Cork Film Festival. I have been meaning to draw attention to these since I first saw them in UCC in 2015, when I was sourcing letters for the project from the UCC Archives and Special Collections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today is my last day working on the project, having\u00a0been involved since its launch in 2013.
