Letter Network

Our network features over 2,000 unique senders and recipients. The links shown are directedi.e., they point from sender to recipient. The thicker links represent more letters being sent between that pair of individuals. The average number of letters sent and received is 1.5 per person.

In social networks there is the well-known concept of “six degrees of separation”. This implies that someone can be connected to anyone else in the world with an average of just six steps through chains of friendship. The average number of steps between any two people in the Letter network is 5.6, slightly below the estimated global version.

The colours of the nodes are determined by the Girvan-Newman community detection algorithm. This finds 10 clusters, these are regions of more densely connected nodes. More details on the network analysis can be found here.
