You are invited to the Cork launch of the Letters of 1916 which will be taking place on Thursday 26 November in the the Boole Library and Boole Lecture Theatre 2, University College Cork. (map).
The event will have several components. From 2 – 5pm the Letters team will be in the Research Skills Teaching Room of the Boole Library (map). Here you can meet the team and learn to transcribe a letter. There will be pop-up talks through the afternoon from Donna Alexander (UCC Digital Arts and Humanities), Daniel Breen, (Cork Public Museum) and Brian McGee (Cork City and County Archives). The Cork launch is also an opportunity for the Letters of 1916 to conduct a collection event in Cork to digitise any letters that you bring along. We are especially interested in letters written between 1 November 1915 and 31 October 1916, and any accompanying photographs of the correspondents. In addition, UCC Library archivist, Emer Twomey, will be providing advice on the storage and care of your century-old documents.

From 6.30 – 7.30pm, Crónán Ó Doibhlin from UCC library will be delighted to introduce a host of speakers for the launch including John Borgonovo, Gabriel Doherty, Helene O’Keeffe and Susan Schreibman. The talks will take place in the Boole Lecture Theatre 2 (map) and will include the history of Cork during 1916 as seen through letters from the Letters of 1916 collection.
The event will be rounded off from 7.45 – 8.30pm with a special session for Secondary School teachers who wish to use 1916-based lesson plans developed for use in Transition Year. 1916 in Transition is a collaboration of the Letters 1916 project and the Military Archives of Ireland and is funded by the Irish Research Council and the Department of Education. The lesson plans explore the Easter Rising through the rich archival sources available through the Letters of 1916 project and the Bureau of Military History.
