The next #AskLetters1916 Twitter chat will take place on Tuesday 3 February 2015 from 5.30 – 6.30pm (GMT). The topic for the chat is:
WOMEN IN 1916
We are delighted to announce that Dr Mary McAuliffe from UCD Women’s Studies and Sinead McCoole, author and curator, will host our chat which aims to explore the participation of women in 1916.
The combining of the many sources and resources we now have can give us a much more complicated, nuanced and complex history of the participation of women in 1916. Combining what we have from the Bureau of Military archives with other online databases like the 1901/1911 census, as well as archival material in national and local archives, memoirs, diaries and oral histories can tell so much more of the women of Cumann na mBan, of the women of the Irish Citizen army and other nationalist women. What were their networks, their activities, their alliances with various other republican, socialist, feminism and other women’s organizations, their debates and splits, and their legacies?
Historians, researchers, and interested parties look to 2016 as an opportunity to bring the contribution of nationalist women, national and local, to the Independence struggle fully into the light.
Sinéad McCoole, Author & Curator [@sinead_mccoole] has written of a number of books on the period, ‘Guns and Chiffon’ ‘No Ordinary Women and most recently ‘Easter Widows.’ She has also curated a number of exhibitions & scripted documentaries relating to the role of women during this period.
Dr Mary McAuliffe, Sinead McCoole and the Letters of 1916 team will be online from 5.30pm on Tuesday 3 February 2015 and we would love to hear your input!
