Nama sets aside €5m for Rising buildings

THE National Asset Management Agency (NAMA) has set aside €5m to helpsave buildings in central Dublin that were used by rebel leaders during the 1916 Rising.
The money will be used to restore 14-17 Moore Street, which were declared a national monument five years ago.
Planning permission was granted in 2010 for a shopping centre between the site and O’Connell Street, leaving the buildings to the wrecker’s ball. Department store John Lewis was to be an anchor tenant.The houses and their surroundings on Moore Street are now set to be fully repaired and conserved.
High-profile developers Joe O’Reilly’s Chartered Land, who built the Dundrum shopping centre and is now one of NAMA’s most indebted clients, was behind the plans.
Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan got cabinet approval earlier this year to allow for a commemorative centre at the site, which is in serious disrepair. The works are to be carried out by 2016, the 100th anniversary of the rebellion.
