A TERRIBLE BEAUTY… background to story. from Tile Films Ltd on Vimeo.
Introduction from the 1916film.com website:
A terrible beauty… Tells the story of the men and women of the easter rising. The ordinary irish volunteer, british soldier, and the innocent civilians caught up in a conflict many did not understand. It captures a brief moment in the lives of the men of the sherwood foresters who fought in dublin and the irish rebels who faced them.
The british soldiers were the last of the great war volunteers, “pals” who joined up together to fight the “hun”. They knew that there was a strong chance they would die in france, but to die in dublin would never have crossed their minds. The irish volunteers were “weekend warriors”, caught up in a great game. Many of these volunteers had no idea they were about to take part in large scale battles on the streets of dublin.
The programme follows their encounter at the bridge over the canal at mount street and the slaughter which followed that set off a chain of events, culminating in the murder of fifteen innocent men and boys in north king street.
