The Letters of 1916 project team is delighted to announce that we have just added our 1000th letter to the collection! To mark the addition of the 1000th letter, Dr. Brian Hughes has written this feature on the letter writer, Alfred Crofton, and its recipient, his aunt, Lady Augusta Clonbrock.
Over 210,000 Irish men, all volunteers, served in the British armed forces during the Great War. This letter is an important part of the story of the contribution of the Irish diaspora to the Great War and serves as a reminder of the varied and complex nature of Irish involvement in that war.
The Letters of 1916 editors would like to thank all of our contributors to the project so far. The success of a project like Letters of 1916 is down to the volunteers, without whom, the project could not continue.
